The Montessori Method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1912, is an educational pedagogy that stimulates and celebrates the holistic growth of the individual child. The philosophy is inspired by the ability of the child to absorb the world around them and educate themselves on their surroundings.
Maria Montessori designed an educational environment and curriculum based on human physical and psychological development. Early childhood development occurs in a series of sensitive periods, during which learning is rapid and elating. During sensitive periods, children are intrinsically focused on establishing a sense of order and mastery of one's body, intellect, and emotions. The environment is specifically prepared and maintained so that the children are free to work independently, seeking and gaining functional independence.
The Guide is trained in the individual presentations of Montessori's materials as well as observation of and planning for each individual's needs of the mixed-age classroom. The design of the classroom allows for the children to progress at their own intellectual pace and fosters the fulfillment of each child's highest potential and the opportunity to learn individually and together as an community.
